HK Wetland Park 20 Jan 2019 - Cinnamon Bittern

A very hot day today, nothing really surprised except a Eastern Marsh Harrier, Falco species and a very friendly Cinnamon Bittern. I did not bring my camera but luckily I could use the office one, even the quality is not good at all.

2019 Big Year marked at 115.

Kowloon Park 19 Jan 2019 - Slaty-legged Crake

An incidental walk in Kowloon Park with Chelsea in evening after lectures, resulted a well-seen Slaty-legged Crake, which has been stayed awhile already. No camera, no light, but we still could see the black legs.

My 2019 Big Year is now 110.

Not necessarily need a checklist, the other three species we saw are Black-crowned Night Heron, Blue Whistling Thrush and Oriental Magpie Robin.

Slaty-legged Crake - quite impossible to see in this photo

should be here

Tai Po Kau 12 Jan 2018 - causal walk...

First TPK day in 2019 and also my 29th failure for the White-spectacled Warbler.... which was seen well today just 15 mins after we left and an hour before we arrived, in where we stayed and waited...

That’s the destiny maybe but I still wish my 30th trial could be a turning point. A wish, as always.

A Speckled Piculet was the most memorable bird of the day, perching well but my camera failed to focus, another time another destiny.

Before and after work, we went for a walk near Nam Sang Wai. Another causal walk, resulted (rather) some unexpected found of a tiring day: Eurasian Wryneck, 15 Grey-headed Lapwing, Red-flanked Bluetail etc. etc. The 2019 Big Year is now 102.

Fujian 25-29 Dec 2018 - an Endgame Trip of my 10th year

2018 was my 10th birding year in my life. We have been to many places, many countries in these 10 years but I can never forget my first ever birding trip is going Fujian for the Chinese Crested Tern with Koel when we both were very young and now he is Joyce’s husband already! We planned to go to Yunnan this Christmas at first, where I could meet my 1000th lifer before the end of 2018, but sadly we couldn’t visit due to my family issue. No matter, a short trip was found to be doable at the last moment, then we visited Fujian, again.

Our targets this time were very specific, the two major targets which we both missed last time - Elliot’s Pheasant and Blyth’s Kingfisher - the two specialists in Southeast China. Thanks to the guiding by Xao Xe 小謝, we could tick both at the first out of three birding days. And we were able to see two more lifers too - Koklass Pheasant and Grey-sided Scimitar-babbler! Thank you so much!

Though time was short, there were some dips too like Spotted Elachura, Grey-headed and Short-tailed Parrotbill, Pale-headed Woodpecker etc etc... Leave to next time.

10-years is a stage. My first stage in my birder’s life has ended and we shall get well prepared for the second stage - to achieve better, and explore further.

----- Our birding hearts will go on -----

Ellot's Pheasant - one of the most beautiful birds we saw in 2018
