LONGOT E3A - the start of thermal birding

Since started night birding, we tried different methods like random searching, torch searching, play-back (remembering the close Mountain Scops Owl in Taiwan but did not show up) and red-light torch searching (found the Mountain Scops Owl [again] in Malaysia).

In this Jan, before the global outbreak of Covid-19, I was lucky enough to borrow a thermal scope (LONGOT E3A) from my friend in mainland. Tried several months in South Africa and Hong Kong, I would say this is a revolutionary birding tool specific for night birding. So I am gonna share some experience here.

the one I am testig is LONGOT E3A

the specification for four models, E3A is better for searching (easier) because of the focal length. The other three are either too short or too long, hence too wide or narrow angle of view.

generally speaking just four buttons here, easy to use. This scope can be connected to smart phone or pad with the APP by Wifi. You can take/share photos/video or even use the phone/pad as the screen. (though I did not try the video function)

front view, from top tot bottom there are torch (I tried but not really useful, especially I got my own torch which is more powerful), the lens and laser pointer

the plastic cap can be broken very easily (and it did finally).
Well, same as my Leica Noctivid... so what then

the screen - powered by two 18650 batteries, again easy to use

but i think the screen can be better fit in future design, also the charging/transferring probe is mini USB type, which is quite uncommon now. I will prefer micro or type-C connection.

There are several modes in this model, white-and-black (showing warm object in white), black-and-white (reverse), red (showing warm in white and red, as this boar) and color (red/yellow vs blue/purple). I love the red mode personally and more easy to search birds or mammals in dark. As in the screen, the top right corner showed the battery of the screen while the bottom left corner showed the battery of the scope. As the one I tested was a sample scope, the battery is not as good as I expect, but still enough for a night.

more than 50m in low light, we could not see the dog barely - these photos are taken by the scope directly

Black-crowned Night Heron

Black-crowned Night Heron

some tips for using, as the metering system is still slow, and useless when there is high contrasting background environment (like you cannot search anything of canopy with sky background, you will only see a screen of black or white, unless the object is close or large enough and you will sense the red), so you better scan slowly and observe carefully, then walk closer when you spot any suspect on the screen. Sounds difficult but just need more practice (and give up the canopy).
From my experience the owls and roosting birds are not really high at all.
Can you spot the Night Heron?

I would say the E3A is very good enough for amateur or general surveyor, if you are rich or professional, choose the more expensive or military grade then you can get photos or video like the BBC or Night on Earth. I found this Collared Scops Owl behind branches by the thermal scope but I could not see even I torched, so the E3A is far better than enough to me!

the white-and-black mode can show the boar clearly too behind branches

a nest of Collared Scops Owl, three were seen in this pic. The pointer can help searching target faster. (more useful when pointing together with the laser)

Collared Scops Owl

for example here, you can see the laser pointer (red dot), then you can torch and identify the species with bino.

this is a pair of Oriental Magpie Robin

some times the shape of the object can help identification as well, this is a Eurasian Woodcock

To me the E3A is an excellent tool for night birding/mammaling, especially in trip like we found some lifers (roosting birds, mammals) in South Africa. The picture quality is not good but remember this scope is used for searching in acceptable costs.

I strongly recommend to nocturnal birder.

It is time to experience the new nocturnal world.

* please feel free to search my posts tagged with Thermal Birding, nearly all the photos at night were taken with the help of LONGOT E3A

* anyone who is interested to buy or wanna know more information, please contact me

* the official website of LONGOT as here: http://www.szlongot.com/en/index.asp

LONGOT E3A:
Pros:
- easy to use (just four buttons)
- small and light
- Wifi available
- quite sensitive to hot/warm object  (quite important!)
- acceptable cost

Cons:
- easy broken cap and screen not 100% tightly fit
- not micro/type-C connection
- need better battery for the scope
- metering system can be improved (rather slow and useless in high contrasting background environment Eg. canopy vs sky)

San Tin 25 Nov 2019 - endgame grebe

The election finished finally which our side was totally defeated, little bit over our expectations but I don’t think this is the end of our world.

Life goes on, especially the birder life. So after finished counting the vote at 3am, I made a second twitch for the Black-necked Grebe, luckily, it behaved well and allowed good views. Not a lifer for me but a HK tick.

For other migrants, several Common Pochard and a female Ferruginous Duck, the same Great Crested Grebe, Whiskered Tern, two Common Starling, a single Greater Spotted Eagle and Eastern Marsh Harrier, and I flushed a Pheasant-tailed Jacana. Also noted two Dusky Warbler in song (not strange in such a hot day!). Furthermore, an interesting pipit with unstreaked mantle was seen but sadly not good enough for confirmed ID. Well, not a bad morning.

Today was also my first time to make a field test of the sony gear. As I haven’t made correct setting, the photos are just record shots. However, I still find some pros and cons of the A7RIV with the 200-600mm and the 1.4x extender, as generalised here (of course, not a full review!):

1. not user friendly enough comparing canon and nikon
2. I haven’t adjusted correct setting so always out-focus for slow moving birds like the grebe and duck
3. high pixel is good for cropping but bad for noise control, max ISO 1000 for me! Also you need much higher shutter speed
4. the 1.4 extender is good, just minor effect on focusing speed and accuracy
5. need faster and bugger card, more batteries
6. too slow to check and delete photos, but good experience for using EVF
7. hood is weak
8. repeat again, not user friendly lol......

Anyway, I will try more before making a conclusion.

Today’s checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S61728395
and my 2019 HK Big Year is now 289.

Black-necked Grebe - well I just uploaded one photo here as I am really not satisfied about the picture quality of today's shots (for good lighting and acceptable distance with a 600mm and fullframe camera).... I am not so sure this is because of the 1.4 extender or out-focus or low shutter speed (already 1/800s) or my wrong setting or the suppression of RAW to JPEG or my computer problem. Anyway still need to learn and practice more.....
And... absolutely better than iPhone lol......💀💀💀💀💀

Gear Review - Len2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece

Jon suggested me to try this eyepiece (costed me $700 HKD), which can help making your camera lens into a telescope, so I can still bring my big lens to Mai Po while I can have a 'scope' for water birds before buying a car.

The magnification power of the 'scope' can be calculated by the focal length of the lens / 10

For example, 400mm lens equal to 40X scope.

The result was impressive, being a '$700' scope. It is highly recommended for lazy birders like me.

small box of the Lens2scope

a small one, with a tripod mount

small lens inside

workable with my 16-35mm F/4 IS, hence making a 1.6-3.5X scope, but still far too short for birdwatching

you need to flap the rubber if you wear glass

a digiscoping of White Wagtail with the 16-35mm

digiscoping of reed with the 16-35mm

I also brought the Len2scope to Japan last month: a trial with 400mm 2.8 II with 1.4X III

a perching Greater Scaup far away

which was here...

a digiscoping photo of Greater Scaup with the 400mm and 1.4X: the view was fantastic but it was very difficult to do the digiscoping especially the Image Circle always exists

Gear Review - Xpower Lightning Cable 1.2m

We are iPhone users, the phone can assist birding in many ways like sound recording, searching location on map, ebird APPs etc. (Well an android smartphone can do the same thing but I think Apple is more user friendly, especially to macbook users like us).

However, as my phone is getting old, the battery efficiency is poorer than before and charging is always needed. And sadly my Apple cable was broken (the poor design), and my third party one is no longer usable (as no MFI), I need to change a new one.

Xpower cable, first time to try this brand, this 1.2m cable costed me $88 HKD

the MFI license is key, and that's the reason why it costs higher than other third party cable. More about the MFI (https://developer.apple.com/programs/mfi/)

a faster charging time, maybe

this design is good, both sides can be inserted to the USB plug

as Wing Tung recommeded before, bought this cord reel for the cable in Aeon Lifestyle, costed $12 HKD, but the 1.2m cable is too long...

Gear Review - SUNSDOW tripod bag

Wing Tung made several tripod bags in the past but the cloth we bought was easily damaged and so I don't want to further damage the bags due to my own carelessness. And by using the Taobao again, a larger tripod bag was bought because I want to change a new tripod, later, when there is a new super tele lens!

this is the one, there are several sizes to choose, the link is here: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z09.2.0.0.21fe2e8dqaoXWq&id=547535945891&_u=k29jkhel1d20

the package came less than a week

here it is, the one I chose is 100x22cm, costed ¥80 RMB (and $16 HKD shipping)

there is a pocket inside and you can put some other small stuff inside

the material is very good, dust and waterproof

but one disadvantage... I think I bought a wrong size. The bag is so big that two tripods can be put inside! But anyway, this bag is good, even I don't think we will take it outside until I buy a car. For now, the bag can help protecting the tripods at home from dust. Just buy a smaller one next time.

Gear Review - ROLANPRO Canon Extender EF 2X III

I got my first ever 2X extender today, for around 3000 HKD. I haven't tried (or even connected to any camera and lens) yet. For the extender, I bought the protective cloth weeks ago. And finally I could 'open box' today.

my first lens cloth bought from Taobao, 30 RMB for one (exclude shipping). More details here: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z09.2.0.0.43e62e8dhO1mUA&id=38705074308&_u=e29jkhelae2c

the cloth was shipped to HK less than a week, as here, this is just a piece of simple cloth.

my first 2X extender, the version III

the clothing fits the extender very well. There are other colors can be chosen as the link above.

cons: the clothing blocks the red dot for connecting camera, and without any indication on the clothing.

but I realize (suddenly), the pit pattern can help indicating the red dot...

and for the lens connecting part, the red dot on mount as usual.

Generally, this clothing is worth buying for around 40 HKD (include shipping), but it will be better if the clothing is more water-proof.
