The boat trip last month was totally 'banana', today was much better and we did see some terns and Procellariiformes. Mid May is always late for seabirds in Hong Kong but sometimes rarities appear in this month, like Storm-petrel, pterodroma, so they are our main targets but of course we saw none.
Checklist is here: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S45577257
Short-tailed Shearwater - the usual view in HK. Luckily Wing Tung got a better view when she ticked this bird in HK and Japan.
only skua of today, Arctic Skua, a falcon like jizz. This one was showing broken breast band.
the commonest passage migrants on sea - the Red-necked Phalarope, some are molting to summer plumage
Aleutian Tern, not rare in HK but the winter plumage is not common, especially in May
we finally got a better view of Short-tailed Shearwater in HK
we could study the Short-tailed Shearwater well, like by watching the head shape, bill length and depth, also the jizz can help us identifying from Sooty Shearwater when perching on water surface.
Short-tailed Shearwater - underwing pattern is also different to Sooty Shearwater, which is more silvery whitish. Sooty Shearwater is always a potential HK first here!
a common breeding tern, Bridled Tern, the extensive white underwing and the white supercilium help separating from Sooty Tern (another sooty rarities in HK!).
Bridled Tern
