feeder not just attracted birds but also Sable
Japanese Sable
a closer look
birds were attracted by the feeder, mainly Eurasian Jay
the best breakfast
milk from local farm
early dessert
a relaxing morning, with tea
we may eat the same bread with the Eurasian Jay
Jay is a rare bird in HK but you can have excellent view here in Hokkaido, and many places in the whole Eurasia
back of Eurasian Jay
more Jay
and Jay
they are very common here
the commonest woodpecker in Hokkaido, the Great Spotted Woodpecker
there were at least 2-3 birds visiting the feeder
Brown-eared Bulbul
a noisy Brown-eared Bulbul, but I love this species
Japanese Tit, the Japanese Tit in HK belongs to different subspecies
definitely a Japanese Tit, a polite tit
the first view of our lifer, a sleeping ball
this is not a ball but a Solitary Snipe
Solitary Snipe it is always exciting for us to tick a wader lifer
the snipe only did two things in the whole morning, feed and sleep
Solitary Snipe is a target but not really common in Hokkaido
Solitary Snipe showing tail pattern, but you don't really need this for identifying from other snipe
also a Brown Dipper and a Crested Kingfisher in the same stream
when the road reopened, its time to leave
Goodbye Yoroushi
After that, we moved to a tourist spot - Mount Iō before heading to Lake Kussharo for the swans. We saw a Peregrine Falcon and White-tailed Eagle in Mount Iō.
Mount Iō, with strong smell of sulphur
this is my second time to be here, last time in summer
smoke with sulphur dioxide
easy lunch
easy ice cream
then we arrived Lake Kussharo, the Swan Lake, sadly the storm continued and making photographing hard
phone photo for the Whooper Swan
they were close!
and this one tried to bite my phone, especially when we didn't have any bread
more Whooper Swan
Swan against the storm
we faced the same storm as the swan
Whooper Swan
more Swan
Swan
Swan head
more
and more
walking fat swan
sleepy swan
cute swan
nothing-to-do swan
huge swan
group of swan
tired swan
landing swan
landing fat swan
running swan
more landing swan
swan in flight
fighting swan
resting swan
flying swan in snow
more close-up
sleep together
we enjoyed taking swanssssss
and finally, swan in love
also some Mallard there, close enough to see the purplish gloss
we also tried to bird around but as here, the snow storm was heavy and visibility was low, so we chose to arrive our Inn better
storm, impossible to bird
and this is the Inn we stayed - Papilio Gasthof
Papilio Gasthof
our room view
crested ibis with tit
the owner is a bird lover and photographer, this is a peaceful Inn, with a private hot spring room!
we could see birds in the Inn, the feeders attracted many local birds like Japanese Tit
Japanese Tit
the HK subspecies of Japanese Tit is not showing as greenish gloss in mantle as the Hokkaido one
Great Spotted Woodpecker
Eurasian Nuthatch
there were many nuthatch
like a treecreeper
I finally got some decent shots of Eurasian Nuthatch
also a Hawfinch
and lovely Coat Tit
Coal Tit
Marsh Tit, the default species in Marsh vs Willow complex, as photo here you can see a white spot on base of upper mandible, and lack distinctive white wing panel
but some tits showed a clean white wing panel..
a better look. This bird showed large white cheek patch, clean white wing panel, and lack the white spot on base of mandible nor glossy crown, all pro Willow Tits' features. So this is a Willow Tit, a rather uncommon tit here.
and soon getting dark and we were going to have a nice dinner in the Inn
after dinner, we tried to search for Ural Owl but failed, wind was strong, we played the call several times without any response
so I chose for the Hot Spring and Beer!
end of Day 8, a news program reporting the snow storm, sadly one was killed...
